How incredibly exciting it must be, when you’ve finished writing your first novel, to see it in print. It is said that everyone has a novel in them. Are you one of those people just itching to make your debut as a novelist? It’s time to stop procrastinating and do it. If you don’t, you’ll regret it for ever. Start the new year off with a positive plan of action. But, like most who are writing for the first time, you may suddenly find yourself sitting there wondering ‘Where and how do I start?’

As a beginner, the worst thing you could do is go for the big blockbuster, loaded with fancy words and phrases. To start with, stick to a fictional short story. The secret really is to be natural. Lack of confidence can also hinder the creative writing of a beginner novelist. So where do you begin?

All writers will tell you that it is very important to write a little every single day so get down to your local library and check out all the relevant books they have. They will have a selection of all different styles of reading matter for those of you on the verge of writing your first novel. Get your mind in a working mode by reading. This will help you to focus on ideas that may come to light via the reading.

Always have a pen and paper handy to jot down your ideas; you will not remember everything that springs to mind so don’t take any chances – never let an idea get away. While it’s true that no-one else can write down the words for you, the books you read will no doubt not only give you some ideas, but will also greatly help you to express yourself.

Ideas can come to you from many different forms and in many guises, you just have to use your imagination. Don’t forget your fictional tale can be whatever you want it to be. The story is all yours so make the most of it. Whatever you have inside of you that is dying to get out will only happen if you have a go.

Find some time for yourself when you know you won’t be disturbed and get out all the notes you have made from the books you have read. Just remember that not all creative writers are going to be the next Grisham or write a No1 best-seller and, in truth, for the majority writing stories is more of a hobby as many never publish any of their works. Right now, it’s all about getting started.

Take out your notes and randomly pick a word, phrase or whole paragraph and start writing; anything will do, but just write and keep writing until you have exhausted it. It doesn’t matter whether it’s good or bad, it’s all about getting your mind working and your creative juices flowing.

You need to have different styles covering various emotions and feelings. Write a few interesting paragraphs on each of the following:

(1) – Your first kiss

(2) – Your favourite holiday

(3) – The most serious argument you have been involved in

(4) – A close friend’s or family member’s funeral

(5) – The most embarrassing incident you can remember

(6) – Your scariest moment

(7) – The funniest thing that made laugh your socks off.

Once you get your mind working, you will be amazed at the ideas that will start flowing. Now look back over the years at a path that you feel might have changed your life for ever if you had taken it and write a short story about it. Remember this is creative writing so let your imagination run free. Who knows, you may come up with an idea for writing your first novel.

It is these occurrences of yours and other people’s lives that can feed your imagination. There is no hard and fast rule to writing, but making a note of a thought, a word, a phrase, etc as soon as they’re in your head is very important.
